Unlikely Icons; Quick Halloween Costumes

Today I thought I'd share a few quick Halloween idea's that you could create from things you already own just in time for Thursday. None of the looks I've created are particularly scary as I think creating a skeleton or witch look is quite easy to do, plus a bit boring dare I say it.
Frida Kahlo
First up, I thought of the amazing Frida Kahlo, when else could you draw on a monobrow or moustache and still look amazing? All you really need is a flower crown and a mix match of brightly coloured/patterned clothes. As well as the bold patterns, add some statement earrings and a milk maid hair do, then you'll be good to go.  Frida is all about clashing prints so don't worry if you look as if you've just threw on anything you own, It will probably look better that way.
Crazy Cat Lady
Unfortunately I don't think I'm going out for Halloween but if I was, crazy cat lady would be my number one choice for sure. All you'd need is a old nighty and a few cat toys, just stitch or staple them on to prove your crazy cat lady love. Either a grey wig or the cheap choice of talc-en powder in your hair, or if you want to be a stylish granny you could even try pastel hair. Pair all that with some oversized glasses frames and maybe a walking stick and there you have it.. crazy cat lady you are.
Unicorn
A unicorn tail and horn automatically makes a statement but with all the majestic colours and prints I think it would be amazing to walk/prance like a rainbow. You'll always get the one person who says "what are you meant to be?" So why not add a little bottle of unicorn tears that you could wear as a necklace. Just add glitter into a little bottle, then tied with a pretty ribbon.. You could just sprinkle people with glitter if they ask what you are.
Hope you're well& have a happy Halloween!

Unlikely Icons; Would a spaceman wear a skirt?

holographic skirt | £38 (not exact same)
A holographic skirt& lots of pastel colour, what more could you need from a outfit, I really love this skirt but couldn't find the exact link but the one from Topshop is really similar.
Nothing says spaceman inspired quite like a load of planets on your skirt, Although the hat and blouse are pretty simple I think the metallic shoes and jacket would really 'set this look off', lets face it who doesn't want to look like a tin foil spaceman.. only slightly more fashionable.
Cosmic dinosaurs, this top is actually a men's from Topman but I love wearing men's t-shirts especially with really girlie looks& tucked into skirts. Plus I doubt any boy would wear a pink blazer with his space themed dinosaur top anyway.

Unlikely Icons; Hey Lolita Hey

Today's 'unlikely icon' is the novel/film Lolita although the story is pretty old its still an intense read/watch.
If you don't know of the story is kind of a twisted love story between twelve year old Lolita and a much older man. I was watching the film the other week and all I could think was how good Lolita's characters style actually was, this got me thinking it could be good idea for this unlikely icon post.
(the are two versions of the film hence the different actresses below)
Lolita has kind of became famous for the red heart shaped sunglasses, I didn't want to just blog the same so swapped for these red cat eyes (you can see in the image that she actually has cat eye sunglasses so I'm still on track). The high waisted bikini feels really retro especially with the floral print, then a simple pair of white shoes and a pretty hat.
Mum jeans are a huge trend at the minute, adding this vintage black belt just gives it even more of a 90's feel.
Just a plain blouse as she is wearing in the images& I loved these ballet style shoes as the give quite a childish feel to the look since she is only twelve.
I stuck to the crop and skirt from this look, however I haven't styled them as matching pieces, I think the almost neon yellow in the skirt make the look very bold however adding the black shoes&satchel keep it from looking to over the top.

all items show are from Polyvore,
however if you want a certain link just leave it in a comment and I'll soon get back to you.

Unlikely Icons; Your Five A Day

Banana leaf print seems to be huge this summer, everybody has seen the topshop range of this, (I bought the jumpsuit the other day), this look is a bit different and a lot more subtle, the kimono and shorts are pure silk hence the prices. Summer essentials have to be crop tops, a white& a black and you're good to go!
Not banana leaves this time, but banana's themselves.. I kept the top and accessories quite simple for this look because of how bold the prints are on the jacket and skirt.. Who knew bananas could be so fashionable.
This look is a bit more 'out there' with all the clashing looks, but I think it would actually look really nice on, the statement shoes would stand out perfectly against the pastel shades.
Hope you're all well.

Unlikely Icons; Granny Chic

I was looking at old photographs today (as you do) and came across my old 'myspace', I wrote how "I probably dress like your nan" when I was fifteen, this got me thinking. I'm always lending my nan's clothes and think some granny's dress amazing.. This made me think of a few outfits I'd wear myself but also what the 'older woman' could feel happy wearing..
floral cardigan - most nan's love a patterned cardi
midi skirts - nan's usually have a ankles only rule, I'd be worried if I saw them in mini skirts
cape - I loved this cape coat and the colour to, I could see a granny in it for sure
brogues - because it's a obvious choice for flats, no heels here
bag - a cute crotchet bag
glasses - cat eye glasses to relive their youth of course

I think this is more 'glam 20 year old nan'
hat - to pop on during bad hair days
satchel - because they just keep coming back into fashion, reminder of school
socks - maybe another school reminder, or swap for black tights
dress - tartan, all nan's could pull off tartan& a cute nan friendly peter pan collar
sandals - sandals and socks done well
trousers | patterned pants are the best& I think nan's would look just a good in them
faux fur coat | pat butcher would be proud, maybe even add a bit of leopard print
t-shirt | all nan's love a plain tee
shoes | pastels colours would look cute with cute granny hair
glasses | vintage glasses.. what more can I say?

Unlikely Icons: Where the wild things are.

Earlier this week I watched Where The Wild Things Are, for the first time. To tell the truth I wasn't the biggest fan of the story (although I did cry) but I did really enjoy how it was filmed, it truly is a beautifully edited film. However watching the film did get me thinking about the costumes so I thought it would be perfect for a unlikely icon blog post:
I have chosen two characters from the film first being 'Alexander' who I think is a goat? I didn't like the idea of an entire outfit of faux fur so I kept the top half faux fur and the bottom pretty simple. I used the same colour as his fur for the coat and turtle neck top, then kept to beige for the trousers and bag.. and of course all goats need glittery gold shoes.
Secondly is Max, probably the best fancy dress costume around at the moment, (if you google it you'll see what I mean, grown men in squirrel suits and a gold crown!) however I decided to go for a 'less obvious' outfit. I've kept to the 'one piece' using this all white jumpsuit. An the ever so obvious crown, this is a lace crown from Regal Rose (here), For the socks.. If Max would of being a girl of course he'd have frilly socks on for strolling round the woods.

Unlikely Icons; My Favourite

Dame Edna Everage
So, I was sat feeling sorry for myself tonight with my lovely tonsillitis, when I started having a think about my unlikely icons then this lovely lady(man?) popped up on television in an amazing sequin eye jumper. I actually love every outfit I've seen.
[All the clothing images via. Polyvore]

I haven't linked any of these item's but I'll leave a reply comment if you wish to know where to buy any of the item, the eyelash glasses&lobster necklace are from Tatty Devine which I think are the most outgoing pieces above. We should of all known how stylish she was having pastel hair all that time ago.
I've never been one to clash all the patterns and colours of my clothes but I'm going to start having ago, Dame Edna is my new style icon for sure!

Unlikely Icons;

[today I wanted to do a post a little bit different, I thought using people/animals/characters would be a good way to inspire outfits, so that's exactly what I have done]
